INFO Report: WHO Updates Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptives

[Full Text: PDF, 8 p., 929 kb]  WHO Updates Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptives

Summary: This issue of INFO Reports focuses on changes and new criteria from the World Health Organization's 2004 Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use likely to have the greatest impact on service delivery, including the following related to IUDs: Most women with HIV infection generally can use IUDs. The IUD generally can stay in place during treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or pelvic inflammatory disease. Even in areas where STIs are common, a woman can usually have an IUD inserted unless she faces a very high individual likelihood of exposure to chlamydia or gonorrhea.
